The study highlights the association pattern of tree species in Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (KWS) a tropical moist deciduous forest of Terai region of Uttar Pradesh, India. In the present study the ecological exploration has been done to dig out the current statuse of the forest types in the sanctuary area. The cluster and PCA analyses grouped the forests of KWS into three major forest types: sal forest, miscellaneous forest and teak plantation. The different forest type exhibit differences in tree dominance and diversity: sal forest is dominated by Shorea robusta, miscellaneous forest by Mallotus philippensis and teak plantation by Tectona grandis.

The tree species richness has been found 48.07 species ha-1 in teak plantation, 52.63 in miscellaneous forest and 55.35 in sal forest. The tree density has been found 769.23 stem ha-1 in teak plantation, 742.86 in sal forest and 671.05 in miscellaneous forest. The basal cover was observed 1260.75 m2 h-1 in miscellaneous forest, 3533.61 in sal forest and 4933.97 in teak plantation. The diversity indexes (Shannon & Fisher-alpha) have been found maximum (2.666 & 12.390) in miscellaneous forest, moderate (2.152 & 8.677) in sal forest and low (1.134 & 6.482) in teak plantation. The species heterogeneity has been found maximum (0.862) in miscellaneous forest, moderate (0.785) in sal forest and minimum (0.399) in teak plantation. The tree species richness and the basal area have also been found more in comparison with the previous reports from the area. Randomized complete block design with four replications in two drought and non-drought environments was used for this study. Drought resistance indices were calculated based on seed yield in stress and non-stress conditions. The results showed that GMP and STI were the best drought resistance indices so had the positive and significant correlation with Yp and Ys. Three dimensional graph showed that RFG5*AF80, G-543 and Farokh were the drought resistant hybrids. These hybrids had the highest amount of Yp, Ys, GMP and STI that revealed the highest yield potential as well as drought tolerance in these genotypes. Because of that these hybrids have promised potential to cultivate in drought prone environments.

Regression analysis revealed that the traits grain filling rate, grain filling duration and water use efficiency accounted for 97.0% of total variation exist in seed yield.Path coefficient analysis demonstrated the highest and positive direct effect of grain filling rate and grain filling duration on seed yield in sunflower hybrids. Water use efficiency had low direct effect while high indirect effects via grain filling duration on seed yield. Therefore, the study revealed the importance of total grain filling rate and grain filling duration as indirect selection criteria for genetic improvement of seed yield in sunflower breeding programs especially in early generations. On the other hand, indirect effects of water use efficiency through grain filling duration on seed yield have promising result in selection programs. 1. Department of Biology, College of Science, Princess Nora Bint Abdul Rahman University, Saudi Arabia

This study is to investigate the aspects of the autecology of Calligonum comosum plant. This plant species is one of the famous pastoral plant characterizing the habitat of Saudi Arabia. The C. comosum plant is belonging to the botanical family polygonaceae, plant is frequently used as sources of medicine by rural people. The study site was located in the north-east of Riyadh city, in “Dahna” area. The results showed that C. comosum is dominant plant in the area, 23 plant species were recorded in the study site, belonging to 16 families, they contain 11 perennial types and 12 annuals types, and the C. comosum is important companion plant. C. comosum is perennial shrubs, branched from the base to height of 100 to 200 cm.

The fruits are spherical shape with a thick and long hair its color from yellow to red, this plant is characterized by pure pungent smell and excessive rigidity because it is config.d solid wood. The life cycle of C. comosum is regular for perennial plants, started grow from the seeds after the seasonal rains during November, the flowers and composition of fruits started at March, the production cycle of this plant is about 4 months. The electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil was ranged from 6.4 to 6.7 dS m-1 and, the concentration of SO4 and Fe relatively high. The plant accumulates high content of Mg, Si, Cl and K in their tissues. Get the full articles at: Volume 6, Number 3, March 2015 – JBES
