Treatment of electroplating industry wastewater using iron nanoparticle doped spent tea waste charcoal---- JBES

Potentiality of spent tea waste charcoal has been determined as low cost adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals (Nickel and Chromium) from the waste water with the three fold objective of solid waste management for effective and green treatment of heavy metals’ highly contaminated effluent.
Iron nanoparticles doped tea waste charcoal (Fe-TWC) was synthesized and characterized using powder XRD, SEM and EDX. Synthesized Fe-TWC was found quite effective in removing high concentrations of Ni (II) and Cr (VI) from the simulated samples as well as actual industrial samples.
Adsorption data follows Langmuir adsorption and pseudo-second order kinetic model for both the metals. Thermodynamic parameters have also been assessed.
This study indicated that Fe-TWC can be used as an effective, low cost and environment friendly adsorbent for the treatment of electroplating waste effluent.

In the past decades, the edible vegetable oil fuels were of no interest as a source of energy due to their higher price compared to fossil fuels. Recent increases in petroleum prices and confusions about the future petroleum availability have increased a renewed interest in vegetable oil fuels for diesel engines.
There are large amounts of low-cost oils such as algal oils that could be converted into biodiesel. Microalgae have high potential for production of biodiesel. Thus transition to second generation biofuels, such as microalgae, can also contribute to a decrease in land needs due to their presumed higher energy yields per hectare and non-requirement of agricultural land.
This paper presents technological advances made in extraction of microalgae oil. Different solvent extractions were compared using Soxhlet method for maximum oil extraction. Also the most suitable solvent and temperature conditions for the highest oil extraction yield were determined.

Present status and future trend of chilghoza forest in Goharabad, District Diamer, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

The current study was carried out in Chilghoza forest of Goharabad District Diamer. The study area is situated in the foothills of Hindukush mountain range at 5 Km from KKH, at an elevation of 2000 to 5000 m with an area of 310 km².
Six stands of Chilghoza Forest were selected randomly for the enumeration of data from different locations and aspects suing Point Center Quadrate Method. Stand densities of the six stands were 16.61, 12.168, 7.367, 7.163, 4.320, 3.982 m²/ha respectively in all six stands.
The distribution of Pinus gerardiana is satisfactory in almost in all the stands however the distribution of associated species were very poor. The poor distribution and gaps in small size middle and in large classes, Juniperus excelsa and Quercus ilex seem to be losing ground in this forest due to anthropogenic activities i.e. felling, grazing, sliding, burning and several human induced factors.
As the study area falls under the category of private forest, thus it was found that all of the respondents were owners of the forest. It was interesting to know that the Chilghoza forests are exclusively used for nuts collection.
It was found that 100% villagers depend on the Chilghoza forest for nuts collection and no timber or fuel wood collection is made from the Chilghoza forests, conservation committee have imposed fine on cutting of Chilghoza forests for fuel wood or timber.
However, the associated tree species including Juiper , Oak, Birch and Blue pine are felled for fuel wood and other wood purposes. Government and non-governmental organizations should come forward to support local communities in conservation of the valuable Chilghoza forests.

Modeling the compression index for fine soils using an intelligent method

Construction of buildings and different structures leads to soil consolidation, hence, causes soil settlement. Soil settlement depends on numerous factors, for instance, pressure deformation, depletion of pore water, and so forth.
One way to calculate soil settlement, is utilizing compression index, which is obtained through consolidation test. Obtaining this index through consolidation test is too time-consuming; thus, researchers have attempted to relate compression index to soil physical parameters such as plasticity limit, liquid limit, void ratio, and relative density, which all could be simply measured; therefore, there is great deal of empirical relations in this regard.
In this study, the correlation coefficients between the physical characteristics of fine soil and compression index were investigated using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). A few but common empirical equations describing the relationship of compression index with other soil properties were evaluated along with the developed ANN model in this study.
The results have indicated that among the considered empirical relations, the Rendon-Herrero formula performed better in calculating the compression index.
By comparison, the ANN calculates the compression index more accurately and with less error than the Rendon-Herrero formula.

Performance of tomato as influenced by organic manure and sowing date in Samaru, Zaria

A field trial was conducted to study the performance of tomato as influenced by organic manure and sowing date during the 2013 dry season at the Teaching and Research Farm of Samaru College of Agriculture, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on the growth and yield of tomato.
Treatments consist of control, cow dung, goat manure and poultry manure and sowing date of 8th January, 2013, 22nd January, 2013, 5th February, 2013 and 19th February, 2013 dry season and laid out in a split plot design with organic manure assigned to the main plots; whereas sowing date to the sub plots with three replications.
Data were collected on growth and yield parameters; vine length, number of leaves plant-1, number of branches plant-1, leaf area plant-1, number of flowers plant-1, number of fruits plant-1, fruit weight plant-1, fruit yield plot-1 and fruit yield hectare-1. Results obtained indicated that growth and yield of tomato was lowest in control treatments which showed that the organic manure and sowing date used in the study especially poultry manure and sowing date of 5th February, 2013 promoted the yield of tomato.
Poultry manure and sowing date 5th February, 2013 enhanced tomato vine length, number of leaves plant-1, number of branches plant-1, number of flowers plant-1, number of fruits plant-1, fruit weight plant-1, fruit yield plot-1 and fruit yield hectare-1 compared to control treatments. There was no significant effect with respect to leaf area plant-1, number of fruits plant-1 and fruit weight plant-1.

Vegetation diversity of dune slacks in Egypt

The present study intends to evaluate the dune slacks vegetation inside the sand dune ecosystem of Egypt. It represented by fives slacks in three different habitats: two brackish, two saline and one cultivated slacks in North Sinai.
The density and cover of species were measured in 26 stands, 2X2 m2 each. The total number of their cover was 56 species. The richest habitat was the brackish slacks followed by cultivated and saline slacks respectively.
By using two way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) it gives 12 groups as follow (5 cultivated groups, 4 brackish groups, and 3 saline groups). By using ordination methods CCA we found highly correlation between cultivated and brackish slacks and the fine soil particles silt and clay and the percentages of organic matters; and salinity, chlorides and sodium salts and the saline slacks.
Line Regression between the number of species and the area of stand is positive in case of cultivated and brackish slacks, and negative between saline slacks and its areas.
